It’s a question that many new vapers ask but even those that have been vaping for some time may not even know the answer.

Does vape juice have an expiration date?

Like many consumables, E-Liquids do have an expiration date but they are also ‘shelf stable’ items. Meaning that they generally last a while before they become a bad idea to vape with.

After an E-Liquid has been manufactured it has a shelf life of two to three years. This can be shorter if the bottle of E-Liquid has been opened or not stored correctly.

How long does E-Liquid last?

E-Liquid is made up of multiple ingredients, some denser than others, so the makeup of your E-Liquid could factor into how long it lasts. Those with a higher PG content have the ability to last longer as propylene glycol naturally prevents degradation over time.

Even though VG (vegetable glycerine) doesn’t have the same innate ability, it doesn’t mean it expires any sooner especially when it’s combined with nicotine and PG.

What happens when E-Liquid goes bad?

The rule of thumb when it comes to E-Liquid, is once the bottle has been opened it will become darker over time as its oxidised due to exposure to oxygen. The taste will also start to change or may even lose its taste overall.

Any sign of a change in colour of your vape juice isn’t too much of a concern unless it’s much darker than what you’ve seen before. In that case it's quite likely past its expiration date.

Expiration dates on E-Liquid are often a guide, they don’t automatically turn bad and become dangerous to vape once the date passes or if there’s a slight change to them.

It will start to degrade naturally over time and while it’s not advisable to vape E-Liquid that is past its expiration date, there is no evidence as of yet that it is dangerous to do so. But whether you would want to continue to vape juice that tastes funny or has little taste is a matter of opinion.

How to correctly store vape juice

The best way to make sure your E-Liquid lasts as long as possible is to store it correctly.

Vape juice doesn’t like direct sunlight or extreme temperatures. This means it’s best to leave your E-Liquid in a nice, dark cupboard where it won’t get too hot or too cold. It also is obviously a good idea to make sure the lids are kept on tightly as the more oxygen that gets to your vape juice, the quicker it will expire.

As long as your bottles of E-Liquid are sealed well when not being used or sat on a windowsill where the sun and heat can potentially get at it, you will be ok.

If you’re using 10ml nicotine salts you probably won’t see this issue arise often as most vapers tend to finish a bottle quickly enough – especially if it’s Pod Salt, you want to vape them all day long. But for shortfills and longfills, the struggle to keep them fresh can be real so make sure to take note of our storage points.
