Is vaping harmful and are E-Cigarettes as bad as some would have you believe? At Pod Salt, we’re passionate about helping smokers on their journey to quit and make the switch from cigarettes to vaping. Today we question the harm of vaping and whether there is genuine worry around vaping nicotine.

E-Cigarettes must be harmful as they contain nicotine

Nicotine, the devil you know.

Many people have been introduced to this substance via smoking, and it can be the very reason why you may find it hard to quit smoking. This addictive substance is found in tobacco plants and can be as addictive as heroine. Tobacco products optimise the delivery of addictive doses of nicotine, and so trying to quit the habit becomes all that harder. Nicotine affects your mood, appetite, and memory, it can also raise your heart rate and blood pressure, all the while providing pleasant feelings.

What’s the harm in nicotine?

According to studies…not that much. Despite being addictive, nicotine is relatively harmless and doesn’t cause smoking-related diseases such as cancer. Most of the harm from smoking comes from the combustion of the cigarette and inhaling the thousands of harmful chemicals from tobacco smoke. Of course, there can still be effects from nicotine use such as elevated blood pressure, and greater effects when going through withdrawal such as anxiety, nausea, headaches, irritability etc. Therefore, Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) helps in both providing a less harmful alternative in providing nicotine, and to help eventually lower the intake of nicotine.

Are E-Cigarettes more harmful then?

The short answer is no, vaping has been shown to be far less harmful than smoking. Public Health England notes through studies on vaping in the UK, that it is 95% safer than smoking. It is important to note that vaping is not harmless either, after all nicotine is still an addictive stimulant, which is why vaping and E-Cigarettes are beneficial for smokers looking to quit – for those such people the benefits are substantial, see our post on the reasons for quitting smoking here.

The healthiest option is to not vape or smoke altogether, but vaping provides a much less harmful way to quit smoking. For this reason, we suggest that only those who are looking to quit smoking partake in vaping – don’t vape, especially nicotine-based E-Liquids, if you don’t smoke.
